Harford Mutual sings "Just Another Manic Monday"
Harford Mutual Insurance employees woke up bright and early to start our work week on June 12th for "Manic Mondays!" on WJZ. We're celebrating our 175th Anniversary and an employee committee chose this activity as a fun way to get the word out about our great company and long history serving Marylanders. We had a blast! Harford Mutual participates in SARC's 9th Annual Walk-a-Mile In Her Shoes
Congratulations to Harford Mutual Insurance's team PUMPED UP for coming in as 1st Place Team Fundraiser with over $21k for SARC's 9th Annual Walk-a-Mile In Her Shoes and President/CEO Steve Linkous leading the efforts with over $20k raised as top individual fundraiser. Over 200 walkers and their families gathered today at the walk to raise awareness and support for SARC and the services they provide victims of sexual/spousal abuse and violence. Way to go team PUMPED UP!

Guidewire Billing Center went live
The Harford Mutual Insurance Project Team and IT department, led by our CIO, Tim Baum, celebrated the implementation of our new Guidewire Billing Center nearly two months ahead of schedule with a catered breakfast. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to this great company!

Congressman Andy Harris presented with NAMIC's Ben Franklin Award
Our President/CEO Steve Linkous along with Vice President - Underwriting & Marketing Jeff Borkowski of Brethren Mutual Insurance Company and President and CEO Nancy Newmister of Frederick Mutual Insurance Company presented Congressman Andy Harris with NAMIC's Ben Franklin Award. The award is given to federal legislators who demonstrate unwavering support and leadership on behalf of NAMIC members, insurance consumers, and the property/casualty insurance industry. All were in attendance to discuss legislative issues affecting the insurance industry at the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies Congressional Contact Program.

Service Award Breakfast
Harford Mutual Insurance recognized 16 employees reaching anniversary milestones at our annual Service Awards Breakfast at Ladew Topiary Gardens. Five employees marked five years with the company; six employees marked 10 years; one each marked 20, 30, and 35 years; and two marked 25 years for a total of 220 years of combined service. Harford Mutual is celebrating its own 175th Anniversary of continuous service in Bel Air and to its agents and clients and is especially proud of these exceptional employees.

Founded in 1842 as a Mutual Fire Insurance Company, Harford Mutual Insurance recognizes the importance of First Responders! As part of Harford Mutual's 175th Anniversary, employees served Mission BBQ to the fire houses in Harford County. Check out our visit to The Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company!

Harford Mutual President/CEO Steve Linkous speaks at Temple University
Harford Mutual Insurance President & CEO and Current Chair of National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies Steve Linkous was the honored H. Wayne Snider Guest Lecturer for Gamma Iota Sigma - Sigma Chapter at Temple University. Linkous spoke about why mutuals matter and the importance of recruiting millennials to ensure the insurance talent pipeline. Harford Mutual participates in the internship program with Temple University and has had success in recruiting them for permanent employment.

Be inspired! Tia Timpson is an Accounting Assistant in our Treasury Department and survived a stroke while in college. Tia was honored with the “Employee of the Year” award from the Harford County Government Disability Commission in 2016. Gary Berger of HMS surpasses $10 million in direct written premium in 2016
Harford Mutual Insurance President/CEO Steve Linkous presented Gary Berger, President/CEO of HMS Insurance, with our recognition award for surpassing the $10M mark in direct written premium in 2016. We are proud of our independent agency partners and their Commitment to Mutual Success.

Harford Mutual Awarded the 2016 CPCU Employer of the Year Award
Harford Mutual Insurance was excited to receive the 2016 Employer of the Year award from Maryland CPCU Society Chapter, Inc. during their Annual Holiday Party and Awards Ceremony this past December at Country Club of MD.

This award is in recognition of an employer for their support they provide to employees in earning their CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter) designation, as well as their involvement in the CPCU Society throughout the year. In order to achieve this prestigious designation, designees must pass extensive national exams covering such topics as insurance law, history, contracts, property insurance, liability insurance, operations, rate making, and risk management, as well as business courses in finance, corporate structure, and ethics.

During 2016, Harford Mutual had seven employees earn their CPCU designation. On September 27, 2016, Alison Barry, Mike Borzatti, CJ D'Alessio, Jack Griffin, Laura Kurrle, Mike Surell, and Ed Yingling were welcomed into the MD CPCU Society Chapter during the 66th Annual Conferment Dinner and Recognition Ceremony. Caty Hartley, MD CPCU Society Chapter President said, "We are very proud and honored to have these individuals represent the Maryland CPCU Society Chapter."

Harford Mutual Starts 2017 with Changes in Claims Department
Debbie Betten, CPCU, AIC retired from Harford Mutual in December after 28 years of service. Hired in 1988 and beginning her career in Underwriting, Betten joined the Claims Department in 1997.  She was promoted to Claims Manager then Claims Director in 2006.  Betten received the 2007 Award for Academic Excellence from The Institutes for her stellar performance in attaining the CPCU designation.

Karl Hancock, AIC is promoted to Director of Claims.  Hired in June 2015, Hancock is a graduate of Penn State and spent many years as Vice President of Claims at Millers Mutual.

Tara Turner CPCU, AIC is promoted to Claims Operations Manager.  Hired in 2000 and joining Claims in 2003, Turner has served as Claims Supervisor–Casualty since 2011.

Alison Barry, Esq., CPCU, AIC is promoted to Claims Supervisor–Casualty. Berry was hired in August 2013 after completing a clerkship for Harford County Circuit Court Judge William O. Carr.

Ryan Smith CPCU, AIC is promoted to Claims Supervisor–Property. Smith is a graduate of Temple University and joined the Claims Staff in November 2008.
