Tim Baum New VP & CIO
Tim Baum joined Harford Mutual in August as Director of IT and was recently promoted to Vice President and Chief Information Officer as former CIO Steve Fabian retired at the end of October. Baum will lead the IT department as it continues to convert the company’s legacy systems to the Guidewire Insurance Suite. Baum’s extensive technology project management experience will allow him to seamlessly take the helm of the Project Team and assist them in the successful implementation in 2017.
Prior to joining Harford Mutual, Baum was the Division IT Director for Zurich Insurance Company Ltd; Vice President of Corporate Development at FEI Systems and Vice President at T. Rowe Price. He graduated from Covenant College with dual degrees in Information and Computer Science and Business Administration and earned his PMP (Project Management Professional) from Project Management Institute.
Harford Mutual Employee Tia Timpson Honored as “Employee of the Year” by Harford County Government Disability Commission
Harford Mutual Insurance announces that Tia Timpson, Accounting Assistant, was named “Employee of the Year” by the Harford County Commission for Disabilities to commemorate National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This award is given to an individual with a disability who is a resident of Harford County and/or employed in Harford County and has exhibited exceptional ability and determination in entering or re-entering the workforce.
Timpson suffered a massive stroke in her sophomore year at North Carolina University-Greenville. The stroke left her a hemiplegic, losing her ability to walk or stand and severely compromising her speech. After undergoing extensive therapy and unable to return to campus, Tia completed her degree online earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. A former intern with Harford Mutual during her junior and senior year at Edgewood High School, Tia was hired into an open position in the Finance Department.
Timpson lends her story about stroke, survival and disabilities as a Graduate Speaker for Edgewood H.S. Academy of Finance; a National Ambassador for the American Heart Association; and an Ambassador to the National Stroke Association. She was also Crowned Miss Women’s Challenge in 2013 by the nonprofit organization Women’s Challenge, Inc.
AutoPay with EFT Now Available
Working with Paymentus, Harford Mutual unveiled a new customer portal with enhanced payment options, including scheduled AutoPay with EFT. The new feature gives customers the ultimate convenience by allowing advanced and automatic scheduling and payment without additional account management. Once the payment is set up, customers can be assured that their payments are made correctly and on the due date. The new portal also allows for one-time payments using credit cards and bank accounts and the option to pay any amount up the total balance owed.
Linkous Named NAMIC Chair
President/CEO Steve Linkous was appointed as the new chairman of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) at their annual convention in September. Linkous will represent the association’s more than 1,400 members at industry meetings and events, as well as with legislators and regulators.
Linkous plans to focus on the need to attract new talent to the insurance business and is challenging his colleagues to do the same, saying, “The future of our industry depends on new talent entering it.”
Harford Mutual Insurance Maintains A.M. Best A (Excellent) Rating for 2016
Harford Mutual Insurance Company announced that insurance ratings agency A.M. Best Co. has reaffirmed a financial strength rating of A (Excellent) and an Issuer Credit Rating (ICR) “a” with a Stable outlook for 2016. “Maintaining an A (Excellent) rating during a challenging economic, insurance marketplace and investment climate is a positive accomplishment and critical to our agency partners and policyholders,” said Steve Linkous, President/CEO. Linkous credits the positive rating factors as a result of management’s initiated focus on underwriting discipline, loss control, price monitoring, risk aggregation, reserving methodology, internal controls and technology to better service agents and customers. Harford Mutual’s subsidiary, Firstline National Insurance Company, also retained the same ratings.
Season Voelker Appointed To Harford County Local Management Board
Harford Mutual Insurance announces that Season Voelker, Corporate & Community Engagement Coordinator, received an executive appointment by Harford County Executive Barry Glassman to the Harford County Local Management Board. On April 19, 2016, this appointment was voted and confirmed by the County Council of Harford County. The Harford County Local Management Board’s mission is to assess community assets and needs, facilitate the development of services, and to monitor, evaluate, and continually improve outcomes for children, youth, and families.
Voelker oversees Harford Mutual’s community activities in support of their Corporate Social Responsibility mission and provides a single point of contact for both employees and outside organizations in their volunteer and giving efforts. Prior to joining Harford Mutual, Voelker spent more than 10 years in Resource Development at the United Way of Central MD, Upper Bay Counseling and Catholic Charities-Anna’s House.
Voelker holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science from Towson University. She serves as the Board Development Chair for the Y of Central MD - Harford County Board; the Secretary of the Harford County Chamber of Commerce Young Professional Committee; and the Co-Chair of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County Annual “Youth of the Year” event.

Harford Mutual Insurance Company is pleased to announce that three of its employees have received industry designations from The Institutes, the continuing educational provider of American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters (AICPCU), acknowledging their professional and continuing educational achievements. Members of Harford Mutual’s Claims Department, Zach Koslowsky, Steffanie Maricle and Ryan Pagels each earned their Associate in Claims (AIC) designations.

Additionally, we would like to announce Sandi Taylor as our new Marketing Communications Specialist. Taylor graduated in 2006 from UMBC with a degree in animation and has worked as a contractor for the U.S. Government for the last seven years. With her background in Graphic Design and broad knowledge in digital media, she will be a valuable asset to the Marketing team.

Douglas “DJ” Gargano, Peter Lyons, and Lauren Slaughter have joined the firm’s Claims Department and Vincent “Tony” Orbino will be working with Harford Mutual’s Underwriting Team. The new hires are the direct result of the firm’s long-term growth initiatives.
A part of Harford Mutual’s strategic 10-year plan, the new hires represent a commitment to existing policyholders and independent agency partners to provide best-in-class customer service. Pulling from a variety of insurance related backgrounds, the four individuals denote Harford Mutual’s desire to create a diverse talent pool that can efficiently assist clients with experience-based solutions for their business needs.
Harford Mutual Insurance Company Promotes John Goodin to SVP
Harford Mutual Insurance Company (“Harford Mutual”) is pleased to announce the promotion of John Goodin to Senior Vice President, Commercial Business Services. Unanimously approved by the Board of Directors, the promotion follows the recent retirement of Executive Vice President Robert Ohler.
“Since joining Harford Mutual, John has been instrumental in the evolution, achievements, and ultimate success of the Underwriting Department,” said Harford Mutual President and CEO Steve Linkous. “We look forward to his leadership as we enter this next stage of our corporate growth."
Goodin began his insurance career with Allstate and later Zurich before joining Harford Mutual in 2009 as Director of Underwriting. He was promoted to Assistant Vice President, Commercial Business Services in 2013 and to Vice President in 2015. He has a bachelor’s degree in insurance from Mississippi State University and has earned his Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), and Certified Risk Manager (CRM) designations.
