Development Lead

Job Summary

Harford Mutual is seeking a Development Lead to support the Information Technology Team.  This role will be part of an agile development team, building and working on enterprise-grade software systems on top of the Microsoft development stack as well as multiple COTS platforms. This development will include analysis, design, programming, and implementation.  Company performance reporting and business intelligence tools and the development of the associated data sources are included as part of this role. The Software Development Team Lead will provide technical and team leadership through coaching and mentorship.

Essential Duties

  • Guide team development efforts towards successful project delivery.Provide technical leadership to teammates through coaching and mentorship.
  • Maintain high standards of software quality within the team by establishing good practices and habits.
  • Identify and encourage areas for growth and improvement within the team.
  • Collaborate with other software developers, business analysts, and software architects to plan, design, develop, test, and maintain web- and desktop-based business applications built on Microsoft technologies.
  • Assist in the collection and documentation of user's requirements, and the development of user stories, estimates, and work plans.
  • Prepare reports, manuals, and other documentation on the status, operation, and maintenance of software.
  • Design, develop, and unit test applications in accordance with established standards.
  • Participate in peer reviews of solution designs and related code.
  • Work with teammates in the migration of legacy applications to current Microsoft technologies.
  • Develop, refine, and tune integrations between applications.
  • Analyze and resolve technical and application problems.
  • Assess opportunities for application and process improvement and prepare documentation of rationale to share with team members and other affected parties.
  • Adhere to high-quality development principles while delivering solutions on-time and on-budget.
  • Perform other duties or special projects as required or as assigned by a supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science or related technical degree or 10-15 years of experience in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum of 10-15 years combined experience working directly with and/or managing information system application development at a corporate level, with server and internet-based expertise.
  • 5-7 years supervisory experience in managing a team of 6 or more working with analysis, design, development, implementation, and maintenance aspects of application development.
  • Knowledge of System implementation and system integration processes.
  • Exceptional analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities.

Middle Market Commercial Underwriter

Job Summary

The Middle Market Commercial Underwriter will analyze new and renewal commercial risks for Middle Market accounts and decide whether to provide coverage and under what conditions.  This position will also focus on developing relationships with producers by focusing on the sales aspect of Underwriting. The Middle Market Underwriter serves as a vital link between company personnel, independent agencies, and vendors.

Essential Duties

  • Solicit, underwrite, and sell new business accounts within the framework of company underwriting guidelines.
  • Evaluate renewal accounts by reviewing experience, correspondence and inspections to determine if the account should be non-renewed, renewed, or modified.
  • Maintain and develop sound working relationships with agents by responding to requests for action and information received over the phone, in person, and by mail.
  • Establish and maintain pipeline of new business accounts and identify cross sell and up sell opportunities.
  • Provide recommendations (which are requirements for continuation of coverage) to agents on certain risks based on inspection reports and control compliance through follow-up with agents.
  • Review and analyze claim reports and decide if cause of loss requires underwriting action. If so, notify agent of decision.
  • Complete file documentation according to company requirements.
  • Submit selected risks for reinsurance based on the line of business, size, and type of risk involved and the reinsurance agreement we have with the reinsurer.
  • Provide training, guidance, and counseling to commercial business service staff.
  • Frequently meet with assigned agents to develop and maintain relationships.
  • Maintain links with professional organizations, other company agents and personnel, etc. to stay abreast of changing market conditions.
  • Work in unison with agents and other departments to grow and maintain a profitable book of business.
  • 20% - 30% travel is required for the assigned territory.
  • Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned by a supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree; Degree in Risk and Insurance Management preferred.
  • Minimum of  3-5 years commercial lines underwriting and/or marketing experience.
  • Previous experience in writing Middle Market accounts is preferred.
  • Completion of or participation in the CPCU or CIC programs.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  • Strong collaboration skills and an ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated, and proactive.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multitask and be flexible with regard to workload and assignments.

Claims Examiner, Workers' Compensation

Job Summary

Harford Mutual is seeking a Claims Examiner for the Workers’ Compensation business.  This role will investigate, evaluate, and resolve claims filed by injured workers.  The Examiner will be expected to efficiently and competently handle any claim, complete thorough investigations, accurately determine compensability, and possess comprehensive knowledge of all claim handling procedures and regulations.

Essential Duties

  • Conduct prompt and thorough investigations of claims, within departmental and regulatory guidelines, to accurately determine compensability.Document information obtained during investigative process and actions taken.
  • Regularly communicate with injured workers, policyholders, attorneys, vendors, medical providers, underwriters, and agents.
  • Coordinate and administer medical and lost time benefits in a timely manner.
  • Act in full compliance with departmental procedures and jurisdiction specific rules, regulations, guidelines, and statutes.
  • Accurately complete and file proper formwork, as designated by each jurisdiction, and satisfy all EDI filing requirements.
  • Identify potentially large exposures and provide timely reserve recommendations.
  • Maintain compliance with all Medicare reporting requirements and utilize Medicare set-asides when appropriate.
  • Foster ongoing business relationships with vendors and effectively utilize resources.
  • Provide excellent customer service to policyholders and injured workers.
  • Communicate with SIU Department in accordance with company guidelines.
  • Responsible for identifying recovery opportunities and collecting from third parties.
  • Obtain adjuster licenses in jurisdictions, as required.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a business related field or equivalent education.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in Workers’ Compensation.
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of jurisdictional statutes and regulations.
  • Understanding and appreciation of technical matters such as compensability, investigative quality, file documentation, timely and adequate reserving, loss adjustment expense control, and customer service.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, along with the ability to make an independent, informed decision.

Software Engineer

Job Summary

Harford Mutual is seeking Software Engineers to support the Information Technology
Team.  This position works independently on complex subroutines and assists in the development of major system modules and applications.

Essential Duties

  • Participates in full life cycle application development, including designing, coding, testing, and debugging.Provides configuration support for third party applications.
  • Collaborate on XSLT mapping and requirements.
  • Coordinates development and testing of all modules per conformance with established departmental guidelines, policies, and practices as well as industry standard guidelines.
  • Performs acceptance testing and program implementation for assigned systems and/or projects. 
  • Conducts thorough problem analysis in regard to technical system and application programs; documents findings and proposes problem resolution alternatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of a four (4) year Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Computer Science/Information Technology program.  Experience can be substituted for a college degree.0-2 years’ experience.

Auto/Casualty Claims Examiner

Job Summary

Harford Mutual is seeking a Claims Examiner to review, evaluate and process third-party, commercial auto and casualty claims. Candidates will be expected to efficiently and competently handle bodily injury, property damage, and extended medical benefits claims in Mid-Atlantic Region. This position requires comprehensive knowledge of, and familiarity with, the following: commercial automobile and general liability coverages, litigation management, experience with evaluating bodily injuries, understanding general liability principles, and relevant premises and auto liability case law.  Familiarity with MD, DE, NJ and PA Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists’ coverage is a plus.

Essential Duties

  • Conducts prompt and thorough investigation of claims within departmental and regulatory guidelines.
  • Documents claim file activity and telephone conversations appropriately.
  • Pro-actively communicates with claimants, policyholders, and underwriters to resolve investigative issues.
  • Establishes, communicates and manages claimant and policyholder expectations.
  • Evaluates bodily injury and property damage exposures.
  • Utilizes most efficient means to obtain claim information.
  • Acts in full compliance with departmental procedures and Unfair Claims Practice regulations.

  • Minimum 3-5 years combined auto liability and/or casualty experience required, and familiarity with MD, DE, NJ and PA Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists’ coverage is a plus.
  • Completion of the AIC designation or participation in the CPCU program
  • Strong collaborating skills, and an ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
