Auto/Casualty Claims Supervisor

Job Summary

Harford Mutual is seeking a Claims Supervisor to oversee the review, evaluation, and process of third-party, commercial auto and casualty claims. Candidates will be expected to efficiently and competently handle bodily injury, property damage, and extended medical benefits claims in Mid-Atlantic Region. This position requires comprehensive knowledge of commercial casualty and automobile coverages, familiarity with proper claims handling procedures, experience with evaluating bodily injuries, and understanding of liability principles and case law.  Familiarity with MD, DE, NJ and PA Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists’ coverage is a plus.

Essential Duties

  • Oversee and be responsible for some litigation management within the unit.
  • Supervise claims representatives, examiners and adjusters.
  • Ensure that appropriate reserving techniques are being used.
  • Audit claim files for compliance with Market Conduct and Claims Service Guidelines.
  • Provide settlement authority to claims examiners where needed.
  • Provide supervision, training, and direction to personnel regarding proper coverage analysis, claim investigation, file documentation, and customer service.
  • Maintain a diary of select cases of claims examiner files that present significant exposures and challenges.
  • Provide necessary information for reinsurers.
  • Ensure compliance with Unfair Claims Practice laws in each state.
  • Effectively work with other departments on matters that affect the entire company.
  • Participate and encourage others to engage in continuing education.
  • Evaluate overall performance and expenses of independent adjusters/ appraisers.
  • Prepare and conduct employee performance evaluations.
  • Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned by a supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • Four-year college degree or comparable work experience
  • 1-3 years of supervisory experience a plus
  • Minimum 5 years combined auto liability and/or casualty experience required, and familiarity with MD, DE, NJ, and PA Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists’ coverage is a plus.
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of casualty/property lines of coverage
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of claims workflow and investigative process
  • Completion of the AIC designation or participation in the CPCU program
  • Understanding and appreciation of technical matters such as coverage analysis, customer service, investigative quality, appropriate file documentation, timely and adequate reserving, and loss adjustment expense control.

Premium Auditor

Job Summary

This position conducts on-site audits of commercial accounts to determine the appropriate classifications and exposures to be used as the basis of premium.  This role assembles facts and data having a bearing on the determination of actual earned premiums for specific classes of casualty insurance including workers' compensation, auto liability, and public liability.  This position will be required to support audit activities in the DC-Metro/Northern VA area.

Essential Duties

  • This position conducts audits on commercial accounts to validate the accuracy of classifications and premium basis within a defined geographical area. 
  • Scheduling audit appointments require advance contact with insured’s, and/or agents.  Travel must be scheduled within the assigned area to allow for completion of a maximum number of audits.
  • This position will require the ability to be on the road conducting physical on-site audits at least 75% of the time.
  • The incumbent must complete an audit based on industry standard rules and interpretation for that jurisdiction.
  • Audits include a physical inspection of insured’s books to obtain the audit exposures.
  • The Auditor should conduct a brief tour of the insured premises to verify hazards and to document any changes in the insured’s operation.
  • The Auditor should send notifications to Underwriters of any unusual conditions that may affect the premium or classifications.
  • The Auditor is to interact with agents and associates to communicate and support the audit results.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum of 2-year degree; Prefer Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Insurance, or equivalent education.
  • Two years of audit experience preferred

Loss Control Manager

Job Summary

Harford Mutual is seeking a Loss Control Manager to lead the Loss Control unit and support Commercial Business services.  This position will manage the daily activities of Loss Control and Premium Audit. These activities include, but are not limited to, the development of Loss Control programs, monitoring the costs and services associated with the various fee companies, performing research, training of internal staff and external clients, developing and maintaining strong agency relationships, and supervising the duties of the internal staff.

Essential Duties

  • The person in this position will be responsible for managing the work performed by external fee companies, used by both Loss Control and Premium Audit, for quality and timeliness.
  • This person will work to develop the technical expertise and knowledge of the staff, and they will also facilitate the Loss Control education programs for other departments.
  • Monitor the selling, and implementation, of the program services for Large Accounts written by the Company.
  • With an increased focus being placed on Insurance Fraud, the Loss Control and Premium Audit Manager will be required to work closely with the Claims Department to address these issues. 
  • The performance of research and the completion of reports for risk improvement is a must for this position. 
  • Through the implementation of internal controls and processes, this person will be responsible for providing excellent customer service.
  • They will be responsible for the oversight and development of the employees in the Loss Control and Premium Audit areas.

Help Desk Technician (Part-Time)

Job Summary

Harford Mutual is seeking a part-time Help Desk Technician to support the Information Technology Team.  This position assists staff with technical support of desktop computers, applications, and related technology.  Support includes specification, installation, and testing of computer systems and peripherals within established standards and guidelines.  This role will be 20-25 hours a week.

Essential Duties

  • Provide support for the installation, configuration, and ongoing usability of desktop computers, peripheral equipment, and software within established standards and guidelines.
  • Assist staff with the maintenance of all current desktop hardware, peripherals, operating systems, management software, etc.
  • Work with Help Desk and Tech Support staff as appropriate to determine and resolve problems received from end users.

Job Summary

Harford Mutual is seeking Software Engineers to support the Information Technology
Team.  This position works independently on complex subroutines and assists in the development of major system modules and applications.

Essential Duties

  • Participates in full life cycle application development, including designing, coding, testing, and debugging.

Premium Audit Administrator

Job Summary

Harford Mutual is seeking a Premium Audit Administrator to support the Premium Audit team.  This position processes all phases of policy audits to determine the amount of premium due to, or from the policyholder.

Essential Duties

  • Determine the type of audit to be performed (physical, phone or voluntary), enter necessary data in the computer and mail out audit requests.
  • Review audit information submitted by Premium Auditors, audit companies, insureds or agents to ensure accuracy and determine if the account has materially changed or no longer falls within company underwriting guidelines.  Notify underwriter if such determination is made.
  • Follow-up with audit companies and staff auditors to ensure compliance with service guidelines and to resolve any inaccuracies or questions with audit results.
  • Process direct and/or voluntary audits.  This includes reviewing information submitted by the insured, agent or audit contact, compiling the information and entering results into the system.
  • Calculate the amount of additional or return premium based on the information supplied by the auditor, agent, or insured.  Enter the information into the computer to generate the final audit.
  • Endorse renewal policy, if needed, to reflect audit results.
  • Handle various requests from fellow employees, insureds, agents, and Workers Comp Bureaus.  Such requests include but are not limited to classification questions, sending audit worksheets and supplying test audit information.
  • Communicate with Premium Auditors, agents, insured’s and Workers Comp Bureaus by telephone and/or written correspondence.

Middle Market Commercial Underwriter

Job Summary

The Middle Market Commercial Underwriter will analyze new and renewal commercial risks for Middle Market accounts and decides whether to provide coverage and if so under what conditions.  This position will also focus on developing the relationships with producers and by focusing on the sales aspect of Underwriting.   The Middle Market underwriter serves as a vital link between company personnel, independent agencies, and vendors.  This role will be based in the Charlotte, North Carolina metro area and responsible for Harford Mutual’s southern states.

Essential Duties

  • Solicit, underwrite and sell new business accounts within the framework of company underwriting guidelines.
  • Evaluate renewal accounts by reviewing experience, correspondence, and inspections to determine if the account should be non-renewed, renewed, or modified.
  • Service accounts as result of requests for action or information received by phone, email, or in person from agents and policyholders in order to develop and maintain sound working relationships with agents.
  • Establish and maintain a pipeline of new business accounts as well as identify cross-sell and up-sell opportunities.
  • Provide recommendations (which are requirements for continuation of coverage) to agents on certain risks based on inspection reports and control compliance through follow-up with agents.
  • Review and analyze claim reports and decide if the cause of loss requires underwriting action and if so, notify agent of the decision.
