Auto Claims Examiner

Job Summary

Harford Mutual is seeking a Claims Examiner to review, evaluate, and process third-party, commercial auto, and casualty claims. Candidates will be expected to efficiently and competently handle claims in the Mid-Atlantic Region for bodily injury, property damage, and extended medical benefits. This position requires comprehensive knowledge of, and familiarity with, the following:   commercial automobile and general liability coverages, litigation management, evaluation of bodily injuries, general liability principles, and relevant premises and auto liability case law.  Familiarity with MD, DE, NJ and PA Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists’ coverage is a plus.

Essential Duties

  • Conducts prompt and thorough investigations of claims within departmental and regulatory guidelines.
  • Documents claim file activity and telephone conversations appropriately.
  • Pro-actively communicates with claimants, policyholders, and underwriters to resolve investigative issues.
  • Establishes, communicates, and manages claimant and policyholder expectations.
  • Evaluates bodily injury and property damage exposures.
  • Utilizes most efficient means to obtain claim information.
  • Acts in full compliance with departmental procedures and Unfair Claims Practice regulations.
  • Responds to customer service issues within required timeframes.
  • Investigates claim personally or through assignment of adjusters, attorneys, experts, and/or appraisers.
  • Collaborates with team members and management in identifying customer service opportunities.
  • Manages some litigated files.
  • Attends mediations, arbitrations, et al.
  • Negotiates claims settlements with third parties.
  • Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned by a supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • Four year college degree or comparable work experience
  • Minimum 1-3 years combined auto liability and/or casualty experience preferred, and familiarity with MD, DE, NJ and PA Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists’ coverage is a plus.
  • Completion of the AIC designation or participation in the CPCU program.
  • Strong collaboration skills and an ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated, and proactive.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and be flexible with regard to workload and assignments.

Premium Auditor

Job Summary

Harford Mutual is seeking a Premium Auditor to support the commercial business unit.   This role conducts onsite audits of commercial accounts to determine the appropriate classifications and exposures to be used as the basis of premium.  This role assembles facts and data which have a bearing in the determination of actual earned premiums for specific classes of casualty insurance including workers' compensation, auto liability, and public liability.  This role will be based out of Pennsylvania, servicing mainly the Philadelphia metro area.

Essential Duties

  • Perform annual review of policyholder’s payroll, accounting, and financial records to determine final exposures on auditable commercial lines policies.
  • Schedule audit appointments, which requires advance contact with insured’s and/or agents.  Travel must be scheduled within the assigned area to allow for completion of a maximum number of audits.
  • Remain current on premium audit rules and information
  • Complete and transmit audits in a timely manner
  • Audits complex commercial lines accounts requiring extensive knowledge of premium auditing.
  • Audits include a physical inspection of insured’s books to obtain the audit exposures.
  • Provide assistance and correspondence with insured’s, vendors, reviewers, underwriters and agents.
  • Assist Audit personnel and SIU in prosecution of Premium Fraud.
  • Assist in the resolution of large and complex audit disputes.
  • Build and maintain working relationships with all departments serviced by your team.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to members of the audit team.
  • Research new technology and new ways of completing audits to streamline and improve the audit process.
  • Provide monthly updates to the Loss Control/Audit Manager.
  • The Auditor should conduct a brief tour of the insured premises to verify hazards and to document any changes in the insured’s operation.
  • Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned by a supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 year degree; Prefer Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Insurance, or equivalent education.
  • Two years of audit experience preferred with experience in conducting audits in PA.
  • PAAS Certification or other industry designation (APA or CPCU) preferred.
  • Ability to travel at least 75% of the time to support audits.
  • Solid analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills along with the ability to make independent, informed decisions.

Production Underwriter - Southern Region

Job Summary

Harford Mutual is seeking a Production Underwriter to support the expansion of our South Carolina agency footprint. This person will also manage some of our existing North Carolina relationships, while helping to expand our presence in the state with a focus on Middle Market sized businesses. The role manages a group of agencies and a book of Commercial Line products within a specific geographic territory to increase written premium, improve loss ratio and retention, increase company name recognition, maintain a high level of customer service satisfaction, and further develop the business potential of the territory, while drawing upon the strategic direction of the corporation and commercial business services area.

Essential Duties

  • Agency Management
    • Develop individual agency business plans which include financial objectives for the specific agent to include premium, loss ratio, new business premium, and policy count retention.
    • Develop and implement agency action plans to meet financial and strategic goals and address any corrective action as needed.
    • Provide training to agency plant on new programs, services, and products in order to assist the agent in achieving their objectives established with the company.
    • Production underwriter will also provide assistance on individual accounts with “field underwriting” and marketing sales presentations to prospective insureds.
    • Facilitate agency reviews with other team members to review the agent’s performance as compared to established goals and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Territory Management
    • Analyze agency profitability for each agent within the territory and use this analysis to develop individual agency and territory action plans to address profitability.
    • Review agency plant production levels and develop individual agency plans to get agents to profit-sharing level.  Action plans can include mergers, terminations, or rehab plans.
    • Gather competitor information and marketing intelligence in order to identify opportunities for improvements to products and pricing.
    • Conduct training programs on new products and services for agents in territory.
    • Production underwriter must know the business climate of the territory/state, to include legal conditions, market trends, and competitor actions and/or programs that may be problematic.  The production underwriter must provide leadership and find solutions to problems as well as ways to exploit opportunities.
  • Prospecting and Appointment of New Agents
    • Review territory and cultivate relationships with agents within the territory for possible future appointments.
    • Appointment of new agents will include knowledge and use of financial tools and resources to identify the potential weaknesses and strengths of the agency under consideration for appointment.
    • Utilize available demographic information to determine where new appointments are needed in order to capitalize on the opportunities within the territory.
  • Underwriting
    • Solicit, underwrite, and sell new business accounts within framework of company underwriting guidelines.
    • Evaluate renewal accounts by reviewing experience, correspondence and inspections to determine if the account should be non-renewed, renewed, or modified.
    • Develop and maintain sound working relationships with agents by servicing accounts in response to requests for action or information from agents and policyholders received by phone, mail, or in person.
    • Provide recommendations (which are requirements for continuation of coverage) to agents on certain risks based on inspection reports and control compliance through follow-up with agents.
    • Review and analyze claim reports and decide if the cause of loss requires underwriting action and if so, notify agent of that decision.
    • Complete file documentation according to company requirements.
    • Submit selected risks for reinsurance based on the line of business, size and type of risk involved, and the reinsurance agreement we have with the reinsurer.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in a business related field.Minimum of 3 years of experience in commercial lines underwriting.
  • Completion of or participation in AU or CPCU programs.
  • Ability to work mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, attention to detail, accuracy, and efficient record keeping required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills along with the ability to make independent, informed decisions.

Information Technology Summer Intern

Job Summary

Harford Mutual is seeking IT Interns to support the Information Technology Team during this coming summer.  This position is for individuals currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, pursuing career opportunities in Information Technology (IT).  The IT intern may take on one or more roles including application development, support, business requirement analysis and specification, and testing.  The IT Intern will be assigned to an IT team, gain experience with professional software development processes and practices, and have a hands-on role in the team’s project and/or support activities.

Essential Duties

  • Complete development tasks in development languages to address defects and deploy fixesPrepare test plans.
  • Execute test cases to ensure solution is working as expected, capture results, and identify and communicate issues.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members.
