Auto Liability Claims Examiner

Job Summary

Harford Mutual is seeking a Claims Examiner to review, evaluate and process third-party, commercial auto claims. Candidates will be expected to efficiently and competently handle bodily injury, property damage, and extended medical benefits claims in Mid-Atlantic Region. This position requires comprehensive knowledge of commercial automobile coverages, familiarity with proper claims handling procedures, experience with evaluating bodily injuries, and understanding of liability principles and auto case law.  Familiarity with MD, DE, NJ and PA Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists’ coverage is a plus.

Essential Duties

  • Conducts prompt and thorough investigation of claims within departmental and regulatory guidelines.
  • Documents claim file activity and telephone conversations appropriately.
  • Pro-actively communicates with claimants, policyholders, and underwriters to resolve investigative issues.
  • Establishes, communicates and manages claimant and policyholder expectations.
  • Evaluates bodily injury and property damage exposures.
  • Utilizes most efficient means to obtain claim information.
  • Acts in full compliance with departmental procedures and Unfair Claims Practice regulations.
  • Responds to customer service issues within required timeframes.
  • Investigates claim personally or through assignment of adjusters, attorneys, experts, and/or appraisers.
  • Collaborates with team members and management in identifying and implementing improvement opportunities.
  • Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned by a supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • Four-year college degree or comparable work experience
  • Minimum 3-5 years combined auto liability and/or casualty experience required, and familiarity with MD, DE, NJ and PA Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists’ coverage is a plus.
  • Completion of the AIC designation or participation in the CPCU program
  • Strong collaborating skills, and an ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multitask, and be flexible with regard to workload and assignments

Middle Market Commercial Underwriter

Job Summary

The Middle Market Commercial Underwriter will analyze new and renewal commercial risks for Middle Market accounts and decides whether to provide coverage and if so under what conditions.  This position will also focus on developing the relationships with producers and by focusing on the sales aspect of Underwriting.   The Middle Market underwriter serves as a vital link between company personnel, independent agencies, and vendors.  This role will be based in the Charlotte, North Carolina metro area and responsible for Harford Mutual’s southern states.

Essential Duties

  • Solicit, underwrite and sell new business accounts within the framework of company underwriting guidelines.
  • Evaluate renewal accounts by reviewing experience, correspondence, and inspections to determine if the account should be non-renewed, renewed, or modified.
  • Service accounts as result of requests for action or information received by phone, email, or in person from agents and policyholders in order to develop and maintain sound working relationships with agents.
  • Establish and maintain a pipeline of new business accounts as well as identify cross-sell and up-sell opportunities.
  • Provide recommendations (which are requirements for continuation of coverage) to agents on certain risks based on inspection reports and control compliance through follow-up with agents.
  • Review and analyze claim reports and decide if the cause of loss requires underwriting action and if so, notify agent of the decision.
  • Complete file documentation according to company requirements.
  • Submit selected risks for reinsurance based on the line of business, size and type of risk involved, and the reinsurance agreement we have with the reinsurer.
  • Provide training, guidance, and counseling to commercial business service staff.
  • Frequently meet with assigned agents to develop and maintain relationships.
  • Maintain links with professional organizations, other company agents and personnel, etc. to stay abreast of changing market conditions.
  • Work in unison with agents and other departments to grow and maintain a profitable book of business.
  • 20% - 30% travel is required for the assigned territory
  • Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned by a supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree; Degree in Risk and Insurance Management preferred
  • Minimum of  3-5 years commercial lines underwriting and/or marketing experience
  • Previous experience in writing Middle Market accounts is preferred
  • Completion of or participation in the CPCU or CIC programs
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference
  • Strong collaborating skills, and an ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Regional Business Development Manager

Job Summary

The Regional Business Development Manager will focus on managing production underwriting, business development, and staff in order to increase written premium, improve loss ratio and retention, and increase Company name recognition. In addition, maintain a high level of customer service and further develop the business potential within our operating territories while drawing upon the strategic direction of the corporation and the commercial business services department.  This role will be based in the Charlotte, North Carolina area and responsible for Harford Mutual’s southern states.

Essential Duties

  • Responsible for the premium development and loss experience of the commercial lines book of business.
  • Management of Production Underwriters and support staff within the unit.  Provides mentoring, leadership and training to production underwriters.
  • Participate in the development of marketing strategies, underwriting policy, pricing strategies, product development, and agency Internet services.
  • Responsible for increasing the company’s presence within the geographic territories in which we operate, and improving the quality of the agency plant within those territories. 
  • Business Development Manager must know the business climate of the territories/states managed, to include legal conditions, market trends and competitor actions.  Must possess a strong understanding of the company’s overall strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in each territory managed.  The business development manager must provide leadership to the production underwriters in finding solutions to problems and ways to exploit the opportunities.
  • Work closely with the production underwriters to identify business opportunities within operating territory.  Strategies are developed and presented to the corporation on how to capitalize on opportunities within the territory.
  • Assists in the development of the annual business development plan.
  • Responsible for the execution of the corporate strategies and business plan within their operating territory. 
  • Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned by a supervisor.

Chief Underwriting Officer

Job Summary

Harford Mutual is seeking a Chief Underwriting Officer to lead the Commercial Business department.  This position oversees the underwriting function for the company, sets and manages various commercial underwriting strategies, ensures proper staffing of trained personnel, maintains service standards, commits that file quality expectations are established and maintained, and efficient workflows are implemented.

Essential Duties

  • Assess current and future needs of Underwriting in areas of staffing, workflow, automation, and take necessary action to meet these needs.
  • Ensure department’s compliance with insurance laws and regulations, establish and enforce service guidelines.
  • Works effectively with other department heads to ensure achievement of corporate strategic objectives.
  • Participates in corporate Strategic Planning process.

  • Provides general staff development through coaching, mentoring, training. Sets training and education expectations.
  • Reviews and ensures compliance with reinsurance contracts pertaining to Underwriting operation.
  • Establish and manage budget projections for the Underwriting Department.
  • Participate in Product Development, Rate Review, Agency Review, and other committees, as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree; Risk and Insurance Management degree is preferred
  • MBA is a plus
  • Completion of AU or CPCU programs
  • Minimum of fifteen (15)  years of commercial property and casualty underwriting experience
  • Previous supervisory or managerial experience is required
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, coach and develop a large underwriting staff.
  • Strong collaborating skills, and an ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
