Harford Mutual Insurance Group's Steven D. Linkous named one of Maryland's Most Admired CEOs

Harford Mutual Insurance Group is proud to announce President & CEO Steven D. Linkous has been named one of Maryland’s 2022 Most Admired CEOs by The Daily Record. This is the second time he has received this honor. 

The Most Admired CEOs list honors talented business CEOs, higher education leaders and nonprofit executive directors throughout Maryland whose leadership and vision are admired by those around them. A panel of judges selects these winners based on professional accomplishments, community service and the letters of references submitted by co-workers, board members and community leaders showing the CEOs leadership and vision. Three-time winners are inducted into the Circle of Leadership. Linkous was also named to the Most Admired CEOs list in 2020.

“I am truly humbled and honored to receive this award and to be recognized among such an accomplished group of leaders,” said Linkous. “This honor would not be possible without our talented leadership team, board, and employees who have helped me grow Harford Mutual into the company it is today.”

Linkous has been a leader at Harford Mutual for more than three decades. He became President & CEO of Harford Mutual in 2006. Linkous has remained steadfast in executing the company’s purpose of insuring opportunity through a commitment to mutual success. He’s also ensured that Harford Mutual’s core values support the company’s vision and shape its culture.

Harford Mutual Insurance Group Promotes New Directors

CJ_Steve_Z.pngHarford Mutual Insurance Group has announced the promotions of Christopher (C.J.)  D’Alessio, CPCU, ARM, AINS to Director of Underwriting, and Steve Zickefoose, AIC, SCLA to Director of Claims.

D’Alessio joined Harford Mutual in 2012 as a Commercial Lines Assistant Underwriter. He was promoted to Underwriter in 2014 and became a Field Underwriting Specialist focusing on Large Accounts in 2015. In 2018, he was named Underwriting Manager of the Middle Market and Large Account Units. D’Alessio earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management from Stevenson University.  

As Director of Underwriting, D’Alessio is responsible for overseeing and managing the books of business for the Foundation, Middle Market, and Large Account Units, as well as overseeing underwriting support teams.

“C.J.’s energy and focus have helped drive profitable growth at Harford Mutual,” said David Curtin, Vice President of Underwriting. “C.J. has helped lead a number of underwriting initiatives in recent years ranging from underwriter training to process improvement and book management. I look forward to CJ taking on new challenges and responsibilities in his new role.”

Zickefoose joined Harford Mutual in 2020 as a Claims Property Manager. Prior to joining Harford Mutual, Zickefoose spent 26 years at Westfield Insurance Group, where he held various claims and claims leadership roles. Zickefoose is also a retired veteran, serving 23 years in the United States Army as an aviator.

As Director of Claims, Zickefoose is responsible for ensuring timely claims resolution, quality customer service, and professional employee development.

“In a short period of time, Steve successfully modernized the Harford Mutual Insurance Group property claims capabilities to ensure we continually provide quality claim service,” said Wayne Gearhart, Vice President of Claims.  “Steve’s exceptional leadership and technical skills will be an asset to the entire claims department as the Director of Claims.” 

Both D’Alessio and Zickefoose completed the Institutes’ Executive Education program in May 2022.

Harford Mutual Insurance Group Named U.S. Insurance Awards Finalist

Harford Mutual Insurance Group has been selected as a finalist in Business Insurance’s 2022 U.S. Insurance Awards for the category of Community Outreach Project of the Year (Donations).

The Business Insurance U.S. Insurance Awards honor teams of professionals working on specific projects in the commercial insurance and risk management industry. This is the fifth year for the awards program and the first time Harford Mutual has been named a finalist.

Harford Mutual was nominated for its HMIG Gives Back Program. In 2021, the company partnered with more than 70 local and national charitable organizations, providing volunteer hours and financial assistance. Harford Mutual ended the year with more than $625,000 in community support, including $17,000 in scholarship donations.

In 2021, the company also created the Harford Mutual Insurance Group (HMIG) Community Fund at the Community Foundation of Harford County. With $300,000 invested, the goal is to build upon the company’s culture of philanthropy and watch it grow to support and uplift many more charitable organizations for years to come.

A panel of risk managers will assess the finalists and the winners in each category will be announced at an awards event in New York on September 14, 2022.

Harford Mutual Insurance Group has been named to Insurance Journal’s 2022 Super Regional Property/Casualty Insurer™ list and to Best’s Review of Top 200 U.S. Property/Casualty Writers 2022 Edition.

Harford Mutual ranked No. 90 on Insurance Journal’s 2022 Super Regional Property/Casualty Insurer™ list. Companies were evaluated based on objective qualifying criteria, including direct written premium, policyholders surplus, and net premium written. This is the 12th consecutive year Harford Mutual has been named to the Super Regional Property/Casualty Insurer™ list and the highest ranking the company has received.

Harford Mutual ranked No. 187 in Best’s Review of Top 200 U.S. Property/Casualty Writers 2022 Edition. Companies were ranked based on 2021 net premiums written. Harford Mutual increased its ranked compared to 2020 when it was ranked No. 192. The list was published in the July 2022 edition of Best’s Review, AM Best’s monthly insurance magazine.

Harford Mutual Insurance Group Maintains A.M. Best "A" (Excellent) Rating

A.M. Best publicly announced the affirmation of Harford Mutual Insurance Group’s financial Strength Rating (FSR) of “A” (Excellent) with a Stable outlook and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating (Long-Term ICR) “a” (Excellent) with a Stable outlook.

“Our excellent results, operations, business profile, enterprise risk management, and strategic accomplishments have led to this result,” said Steven D. Linkous, President & CEO of Harford Mutual Insurance Group.

Metrics cited include capital strength, strong underwriting discipline, strategic planning, and robust Enterprise Risk Management framework and process.

Harford Mutual Insurance Group's Marketing Team Receives Two Best of Show Awards from the Insurance Marketing & Communications Association

The Insurance Marketing & Communications Association (IMCA) Showcase Awards recognize innovative work in insurance marketing and communications. This year, Harford Mutual Insurance Group received two Best of Show Awards for marketing projects completed in 2021 & 2022.

The “HMIG 2022 Insurance Careers Month Campaign” and the “Linkous Family St. Baldrick’s Shave Campaign”, both creating by the Marketing team, each earned a Best of Show Award.

The “HMIG 2022 Insurance Careers Month Campaign” was launched for Insurance Careers Month, which is recognized nationally every February. The purpose of the campaign was to drive new talent to Harford Mutual. This was achieved through our employee journey videos, career opportunity videos, and other media communications launched on social media.

The “Linkous Family St. Baldrick’s Shave Campaign” focused on Harford Mutual Insurance Group President & CEO Steve Linkous, along with his wife and two sons, shaving their heads as part of a fundraiser for The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest non-government funder of childhood cancer research grants. Their efforts and bravery raised a record breaking $560,000 for the foundation. The campaign included videos, a press release, and local television interview highlighting the shave event.

IMCA is the oldest insurance marketing trade association in North America and represents over 120 regional and specialty companies, general agencies, industry suppliers, and prominent multi-line insurance companies and brokerage firms, as well as the top five property and casualty writers in the U.S.

Harford Mutual Insurance Group Employees Honored at Annual Service Awards Breakfast

Harford Mutual Insurance Group recently recognized 20 employees celebrating milestone anniversaries and 180 combined years of service at the annual Service Awards Breakfast. Employees with service anniversaries starting at five years and in increments of five years afterward were honored for their contributions.

Maureen Arnold, Production Underwriter, topped the list of honorees, receiving an award for 30 years of service at the company. Matthew Stachowiak was honored for 25 years of service. Randy Pugh was recognized for 15 years of service.

Employees honored for 10 years of service included Michael Borzatti, Christopher D’Alessio, Kristyn Gray, Jeffery Okeson, and Stacey Pacoe.

Bruce Battaglia, Brett DeMille, Katie Lloyd, Kelly Lozoskie, Scott Macejak, Nicole Maschke, Robert McKinley, Natasha Rebbert, Matthew Stansburge, Brittany Stein, Gary Wilson, and Patricia Wroe received awards for five years of service.

The annual Service Awards Breakfast was held at Rockfield Manor, located in Bel Air, Md. The event provides an opportunity for senior leadership to express their appreciation and celebrate team members for their hard work and dedication to Harford Mutual.

Harford Mutual Insurance Group Announces Elections of Two Board Members

The policyholders of Harford Mutual Insurance Group elected Jillian Froment and Teresa McTague to the Board of Directors at the annual policyholder meeting held in May 2022. Froment and McTague were appointed to the Board in mid-2021.

Froment will serve on the Board’s Audit and Governance Committees. She is a seasoned insurance regulator with extensive experience in both the private and public sectors, including the last 10 years at the Ohio Department of Insurance, where she served as Deputy Director and Director until September 2020. Froment currently serves as an Advisory Board Member for Monitaur, a developer of machine learning assurance technology. She received her Juris Doctorate from Capital University Law School and Bachelor of Science degree from The Ohio State University. Froment will serve a two-year term.

McTague will serve on the Board’s Compensation and Investment Committees. McTague is a senior executive with over 30 years of experience in investments, capital markets, finance, portfolio management, and asset and risk management. She is currently a Senior Managing Director for Aflac Global Investments, also serving as the U.S. Chief Investment Officer; Head of Asset Management Risk; Global Head of Direct Lending, Real Estate and Infrastructure Debt; and Global Head of ESG Investment Strategies. McTague received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California at Berkeley and a Master of Business Administration from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. McTague will serve a three-year term.

Caty Hartley Graduates from Towson University Professional Leadership Program for Women

Caty_TU_Program_Website.pngHarford Mutual Insurance Group is proud to announce that IT Project Manager Caty Hartley has graduated from the Towson University Professional Leadership Program for Women, a professional development program dedicated to increasing the capacity for leadership and influence for women leaders in Greater Baltimore. Hartley graduated on May 17, 2022, and was a member of the seventh cohort of the leadership program.

“The Dr. Nancy Grasmick Leadership Institute Professional Leadership Program for Women is much different than any other leadership program or course that I have been a part of,” said Hartley. “This program was transformational and focused on self-awareness, core values, strengths, innovation, self-care, mindful leadership, and personal growth. I was surrounded by amazing, driven, brave, and passionate women who inspire me and make me want to be a better leader.”

Harford Mutual is committed to fostering advancement and leadership opportunities for all employees, especially women. Assistant Vice President of Marketing & Corporate Communications Stacey Rebbert preceded Hartley, graduating from the Towson University Professional Leadership Program for Women in 2021.

Hartley joined Harford Mutual Insurance Group in February of 2010 as a Claims Examiner and became an IT Project Manager in 2021. In her role, Hartley supervises and leads a team while overseeing multi-million-dollar core system replacement projects.

Hartley earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Towson University. She also holds the Associate in Claims (AIC), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), and Project Management Professional (PMP) designations.

Jennifer Holbrook Named 2022 RISE 35 Under 35 Award Winner

Harford Mutual Insurance Group is proud to announce Senior Commercial Underwriter Jennifer Holbrook has been named a 2022 Rising Insurance Star Executives (RISE) 35 Under 35 Award winner. This award recognizes young professionals making an impact in their company, community, and the insurance industry as a whole. 

At Harford Mutual, Holbrook has mentored our underwriting interns for multiple summers. She continues to foster those relationships with interns to whom we have offered employment opportunities after graduation. She is an active member of Harford Mutual's Spirit Committee, promoting comradery despite the challenges of the recent pandemic. Holbrook is also a member of Harford Mutual's Innovation Chamber working to ensure that positive change for responsible growth is at the forefront of our culture and that all employees have the opportunity to have their ideas heard. 

Holbrook is active in supporting local non-profits in the Harford County community. Since 2015, she has been a member of the Board of Directors at the Harford Center, an organization that provides day programming for adults with differing abilities. Holbrook also volunteers as a foster parent and administrative support for TRU Rescue, a local dog rescue. In January 2022, Jennifer joined the Board of Directors at Chesapeake Therapeutic Riding (CTR), a local organization providing equine-based therapeutic healing and learning. Jennifer also volunteers weekly at CTR to help during lessons for children with differing abilities.

Holbrook was also a finalist for the 2021 Athena Young Professional Leadership Award.

Jackie Selke Named Business Insurance 2022 Break Out Award Winner

Harford Mutual Insurance Group is proud to announce SIU Analyst Jackie Selke has been named a 2022 Break Out Award winner by Business Insurance. The annual program recognizes the top 40 professionals across the U.S. who are on track to be the next leaders in the insurance and risk management industry. 

Selke started her career at Harford Mutual in August 2014 in the Claims Department. As a Claims Examiner, Jackie handled small/medium size commercial auto and liability losses. As her experience grew, Jackie learned more about the claims process, insurance coverage, and investigations. 

In October 2018, Harford Mutual formed the SIU. Through Selke's  investigative work in the Claims department and because of her service skills, positive attitude, and leadership qualities, she was selected to become only the second member of the unit. She was brought on as an SIU Analyst in July 2019. 

The SIU department has saved Harford Mutual and its policyholders more than $3.5 million through their efforts. The past 2 years have averaged around 420 referrals per year, and YTD trends for 2022 suggest that number could approach 600 for the current year. This success would not have been possible without Selke's hard work, team mentality, and service skills.

At Harford Mutual, an environment in which employees of all genders and backgrounds can thrive, 10 of the 34 IT team members are female. This group of women are serving as role models for the next generation of female IT professionals and breaking boundaries in the male-dominated field.

Stacey Rebbert Named One of Maryland's Top 100 Women by The Daily Record

As Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Rebbert has developed the strategies behind the company’s brand management, created the company’s crisis communication plan, and leads her team in the execution of all digital marketing, advertising, employee engagement, public relations, community relations, and corporate communications.

“I am honored to be recognized alongside such a talented and accomplished group of women,” said Rebbert. “I remain committed to inspiring the next generation of female leaders.”

Rebbert holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Towson University and a master’s degree in contemporary communications from Notre Dame of Maryland University. Currently, she serves as a corporate mentor for Towson University’s Outstanding Young Women Leaders Program, which provides leadership skills and experience to female high school juniors/seniors in Baltimore County. Rebbert also serves as an annual mentor for the Towson University Northeast campus graduating seniors’ program.

Rebbert was recently reappointed to the Commission for Women in Harford County. She also currently serves as a Co-Chair of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) Strategic Communications Council, Chair of the Harford Mutual Charitable Giving Committee, and Advisor of the Harford Mutual Innovation Committee and Inclusion, Diversity, and Opportunity Committee. In 2022, Rebbert was named an ATHENA Leadership Award finalist.

Rebbert, along with 99 other influential Maryland women, will be honored at a reception and awards celebration May 9 at the University of Maryland Riggs Alumni Center.

Harford Mutual Insurance Group Creates Charitable Giving Fund with The Community Foundation of Harford County

The Community Foundation of Harford County (CFHC), a nonprofit philanthropic organization dedicated to meeting the changing needs and interests of the Harford County community, announces the creation of the Harford Mutual Insurance Group Community Fund, thanks to their $300,000 contribution.

 “We are proud to have created the Harford Mutual Insurance Group Community Fund. This fund will help Harford Mutual extend its charitable giving to new nonprofit organizations. We also hope to inspire generosity and build upon Harford Mutual’s legacy of service and philanthropy,” says President & CEO Steven D. Linkous.

Harford Mutual Insurance Group, founded in 1842, provides commercial property and casualty insurance products and services to a regional market. Executive Director Jennifer Farrell accepted the contribution on behalf of the Foundation saying “Harford Mutual has shown an extraordinary dedication to philanthropy in Harford County, and we are honored to partner with them as they deepen their commitment to making an impact and strengthening their legacy.”

Besides inspiring like-minded generosity among local donors, the new fund helps Harford Mutual Insurance Group take advantage of CFHC’s expertise in managing charitable support of local nonprofit organizations.

The Community Foundation of Harford County (CFHC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit philanthropic organization. All donations, gifts, and pledges to the CFHC are tax-deductible, and all donations made to the CFHC stay local. David R. Curtin Joins Welcome One Emergency Shelter Board of Directors

Vice President of Underwriting David Curtin has joined the Welcome One Emergency Shelter Board of Directors. Curtin has served on the Board's Finance Committee since September 2021 and will continue to do so in his new role.

Harford Mutual is a proud supporter of Welcome One Emergency Shelter, which is the only year-round homeless shelter in Harford County.

Geneau M. Thames, Esq. Named 2022 Leaders in Law Honoree

FINAL_Geneau_Website.pngHarford Mutual Insurance Group is proud to announce The Daily Record has named Assistant Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary Geneau Thames, Esq. to its 2022 listing of Leaders in Law. Thames was named a Leadership in Law In-House Counsel honoree.

"This year The Daily Record partnered with the Maryland State Bar Association to recognize members of the state's legal community in nine categories, ranging from in-house counsel to justice champion to law firm support staff. These honorees work tirelessly to uphold high legal standards and improve communities throughout Maryland," said Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, senior group publisher of The Daily Record.

Thames has been Harford Mutual’s in-house counsel since May of 2015. She is responsible for advising the CEO and other executives on strategic initiatives for the company. Thames represents the company in dealing with clients, external agencies, and regulatory bodies as the primary legal counsel.

Thames has a dual bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from Towson University and her Juris Doctorate from the University of Baltimore, which she received cum laude. She currently has memberships with the Maryland State Bar Association and the Maryland Defense Bar. Thames is also an active member of DRI, The Voice of the Defense Bar and sits on the Maryland State Ethics Committee, the Federal Affairs Committee for the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC), and the Government Regulations Committee for the Pennsylvania Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (PAMIC). She is currently on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Harford and Cecil Counties and is also a member of the Board of Directors for There Goes My Hero. In 2020, she was named one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women by The Daily Record.

Thames will be recognized with her fellow honorees at a celebration event on April 7, 2022.

Harford Mutual Insurance Group Named to RISE Elite 50 Internships List for Second Year in a Row

For the second year in a row, Harford Mutual Insurance Group has been named to the RISE Elite 50 Internships list. Rising Insurance Star Executives (RISE Professionals) released a list of the top 50 internship programs in the insurance industry across the U.S., and our program was recognized as being one of the best.

Since 2013, more than 40 young professionals have interned in multiple departments at Harford Mutual, including Information Technology, Underwriting, Actuarial, Accounting, and Marketing. Harford Mutual’s Internship Program runs each year from June through early August. During the eight-week program, interns work with employees and managers within their departments assigned and have the opportunity for direct interaction with senior leadership. A total of 14 interns have become full-time employees.

Teresa McTague Appointed to Harford Mutual Insurance Group's Board of Directors

Harford Mutual Insurance Group announces Teresa McTague has been appointed to its Board of Directors. She will serve on the Board’s Compensation and Investment Committees.

McTague is a senior executive with over 30 years of experience in investments, capital markets, finance, portfolio management, and asset and risk management. She is currently a Senior Managing Director for Aflac Global Investments, also serving as the U.S. Chief Investment Officer; Head of Asset Management Risk; Global Head of Direct Lending, Real Estate and Infrastructure Debt; and Global Head of ESG Investment Strategies. She also is a member of the Aflac Asset Mgt. LLC Board. McTague previously served as the Senior Portfolio Manager/Client Strategist at General Re - New England Asset Management.
