Wayne Gearhart joins Harford Mutual as Assistant Vice President



Wayne Gearhart joined Harford Mutual on September 3rd as Assistant Vice President to oversee the Claims Department and its operations.

Wayne began his insurance career in claims before moving onto various claims leadership and strategic roles for the past 24 years.  Over his career, he has led claims operations, with staff sizes of 30 to more than 100, covering workers’ compensation, casualty, and property lines.  In the past several years, Wayne has also served as a Claims Strategy Leader, responsible for directing and executing Claims Department strategies including supporting business process and technological improvements using internal and external resources.  This allows him to bring a wealth of claims expertise and strategic vision to lead claims operations.  He earned his B.S. in Finance from The Ohio State University and received his CPCU designation in 1999.

Harford Mutual announces role changes for several employees, to align with company goals.

To further our ongoing commitment to product development and improvement, Charmian Hess will transition to the role of Product Development Specialist over the next several months. Charmian has been with Harford Mutual since 1990, starting as a commercial underwriter and earning her CPCU, CIC, CRM, and AINS certifications. For the past 12 years, Charmian has been a Production Underwriter managing agents in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Delaware gaining intimate knowledge of what our agents want for their clients and what our competitors are offering. For the past four years, Charmian has spearheaded a small cross-departmental team leading product development efforts by examining our forms and coverages. With her extensive product knowledge, Charmian serves as Marketing’s subject matter expert for the development and accuracy of the Harford Mutual Product Guide and target list of accounts for agents.

As part of the expansion of our Special Investigations Unit, Jackie Selke has taken on the new role of SIU Analyst. Jackie has been with Harford Mutual since 2014, starting as a claims examiner and earning her AIC designation. For the past five years, Jackie has been a valuable member of the claims department, primarily handling medium-size liability losses and serving as the preferred claim handler on several large accounts. As Special Investigations Unit Analyst, Jackie will work to identify possible fraudulent transactions. With the use of referrals from other departments, trend reports, programs designed to identify fraud trends, and her own experience as a claims examiner, Jackie will discern which activities indicate potential for fraud or abuse.

Shannon Siegert has been promoted to Foundation Underwriting Supervisor for the Northern Territory.  Shannon’s appointment to lead the Northern Region is based on her existing relationships with northern agency partners. Shannon is a native of Maryland and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication.  She has 12 years of experience in insurance, beginning in a claims department. In 2009, Shannon moved into small business underwriting and was selected to complete a professional development program with extensive focus on insurance policy language, coverage, and concepts.  Shannon moved to the Western PA territory in 2013 to manage a $10 million book of business on accounts up to $200,000 in premium, growing the territory by over 6%. In addition to her underwriting role, Shannon served as a trainer and mentor to new underwriters coming out of the professional development program and developed a hybrid role for herself where she acted as both the underwriter and sales executive for her territory.

Harford Mutual Insurance Maintains A.M. Best A (Excellent) 2019 Rating
Harford Mutual Insurance Company announced that insurance ratings agency A.M. Best Co. has reaffirmed its financial strength rating of A (Excellent) and an Issuer Credit Rating (ICR) “a” with a Stable outlook on May 24, 2019. “Maintaining an A (Excellent) rating is a testament to our steadfast and long-term performance, execution of a well-defined strategic vision, and fiscal conservatism.  It is of utmost importance to our policyholders and agency partners to be protected by a consistently highly-rated carrier,” said Steve Linkous, President/CEO.  “We are strongly positioned to fulfill our company’s mission of protecting the financial well-being of our policyholders through mutuality, financial strength, quality insurance products and services, and meaningful partnerships.” Harford Mutual’s subsidiary, Firstline National Insurance Company, retains the pooled rating.

Harford Mutual Announces Changes to Leadership

Harford Mutual Insurance, projected to surpass $220 million in direct written premium in its 177th year, announces changes to its leadership team.

Chief Financial Officer Karen L. Mashinski has been promoted to Senior Vice President with the added designation of Treasurer and management responsibility of our human resources department. Mashinski joined Harford Mutual in 2015 as Vice President and CFO, immediately enriching the company’s financial, accounting, risk management, and internal audit strategies and operations.  She developed an Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) practice, refined our financial forecasting and modeling, and improved our financial reporting. In 2018, Mashinski expanded her role assuming oversight of the company’s emerging actuarial service division. 

General Counsel and Director of Compliance Geneau M. Thames, Esq. has been promoted to Assistant Vice President and the officer position of Secretary. Since joining Harford Mutual in 2015, Thames has broadened our legal oversight to include compliance and internal audit; initiated projects to ensure business continuity, workplace safety, and cybersecurity compliance; increased our company profile with regulatory and legislative representation; and developed best practices and ensured adherence for corporate and board governance.

Harford Mutual’s impressive growth over the past 10 years resulted in the distribution of new and increasingly complex tasks and project management to current leadership. The company needed dedicated operational support to efficiently steer the company towards its strategic goals and found that willingness and expertise in Vice President Frank Kellner. Kellner, currently leading the claims department, will assume the newly created role of Vice President, Administrative Operations.  

Kellner has held several leadership positions in his 30-year career with Harford Mutual and was appointed to Vice President of Claims in 2003. In 2013, Kellner assumed the additional responsibilities of the Administrative Services department and the management of the company’s iconic building and growing real estate portfolio.

Harford Mutual Announces Changes to Board of Directors

At its May 15 meeting, the Board of Directors of Harford Mutual approved and announced the following changes. 

Abigail E. Smith, CPA, the first woman appointed to Harford Mutual’s board, was elected as its 12th chair.  A valued member of the board for the past 16 years, Smith is President of Abigail E. Smith, CPA, P.A., an accounting firm located in Baltimore, Maryland. With more than 35 years of public accounting experience, Smith provides comprehensive financial, consulting, and tax services to small- and medium-sized businesses.  Her primary industry focus is automotive, specifically automobile dealerships.

Smith is a member of The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants.  She is a past Trustee of Associated Catholic Charities (ACC) and the Odyssey School Board, a private school specializing in educating children with language learning differences, where she also served a two-year term as board chair.

Throughout her years of service on the Harford Mutual board, Smith was a member of the Executive, Finance, Audit, Investment, and Incident Review (Chair) Committees. 

Smith graduated with high honors from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting.

Smith succeeds Stephen T. Scott as board chair. Scott has served as chair since 2013 and has been a valued board member for 23 years, witnessing a 71% growth in company revenue and a 48% growth in policyholders’ surplus. His leadership has helped the board and company through the development of two strategic plans, including the soon-to-be-released Vision 2027. Scott will remain a member of the board.

The board also named Vernon A. Reid Jr., as a new director. Reid is a retired investment professional, with extensive expertise in the area of fixed income portfolio trading and management, serving as Vice President at T. Rowe Price and as principal partner of V. A. Reid & Associates, a fixed income asset management firm. 

In addition to his new role at Harford Mutual, Reid serves on the boards of Baltimore City Public School System Board of Commissioners, the Enoch Pratt Free Library, and Baltimore Educational Scholarship Trust (BEST).  His past board service includes Vice-President of the T. Rowe Price Foundation (Treasurer), The Walters Art Museum, and the Baltimore City Board of Finance.  He is a graduate of the Greater Baltimore Committee—Leadership and Maryland Leadership programs.  Reid attended the United States Naval Academy, holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Towson University, and an MBA in finance from Indiana University.

Join Poole named to the Board of Chesapeake Therapeutic Riding




Vice President and Treasurer June Poole has been named to the Board of Directors for Chesapeake Therapeutic Riding (CTR). June has been a regular volunteer with CTR since 2018. 

CTR is an equine-based therapeutic healing and learning center in Abingdon, Maryland that connects specially-trained horses with those who may never otherwise have an opportunity to be around them. Programs include physical therapy, bereavement, and horse-powered learning.

Frank Kellner named to Management and Insurance Advisory Board of the University of Baltimore

Harford Mutual Insurance's Vice President and Corporate Secretary, Frank Kellner has been named to the management and insurance advisory board of the University of Baltimore.

The newly launched board will support specialized courses recently added to the Business Administration program at the Merrick School of Business. The decision to begin offering these courses, which will officially launch in August of this year, was made in response to the growing career opportunities in the insurance industry.

David Curtin joins Harford Mutual as Assistant Vice President of Underwriting


David Curtin joins Harford Mutual as Assistant Vice President of Underwriting. David will oversee all underwriting business units. He brings more than 30 years of experience in the insurance industry with both mutual and stock carriers.

David is originally from Sauk City, Wisconsin, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration with a focus on economics from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater and a Master of Business Administration from Northern Illinois University. He also holds CPCU, CIC, CRM, AIM, and AINS designations.

Harford Mutual Insurance opens Office in Fort Mill, South Carolina

Harford Mutual held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of our new office in Fort Mill, South Carolina. In attendance were representatives from the South Carolina Department of Insurance and The York County Regional Chamber of Commerce, as well as those from other Fort Mill businesses.

The new office will serve the expanding Southern Territory of Harford Mutual, including Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee.

Frank Kellner elected to the board of directors for Harford Family House


Frank Kellner, Vice President and Corporate Secretary has been elected to the board of directors for Harford Family House, an organization providing services to families faced with homelessness.

Frank joined Harford Mutual in 1990 and has a longstanding history of community involvement. He was named one of Harford County’s most beautiful people in 2017.

Harford Family House was established in 1989 and provides comprehensive support services to families, including life training, shelter, job preparation, and case management.

The Harford Mutual Insurance Company: Notice is hereby given that in pursuance of the Charter of said company, the regular Annual Meeting of Members will be held at their office in Bel Air, Maryland, on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at 8:30 a.m.  The purpose of the meeting will be to elect Directors and transact such business as may be presented. Geneau Thames appointed to State Ethics Commission 

Harford Mutual Insurance's General Counsel and Director of Compliance, Geneau Thames, Esq. has been appointed to the State Ethics Commission by Governor Larry Hogan.

Geneau will be one of five commission members. The commission meets approximately six times per year to discuss policy and enforcement matters.

Geneau's appointment was one of 124 “Green Bag” appointments made by the governor in February.
