Harford Mutual Insurance Group Supports Hendon Hill Cemetery Project

Harford Mutual Insurance Group announced it has donated $3,750 to the Hendon Hill Cemetery Project.

Hendon Hill is Bel Air’s only historic African American cemetery. It is located on Vale Road and is owned and maintained by Ames United Methodist Church.

Funding for the project helped provide repair and restoration work at the cemetery, which included new signage, a historical marker, driveway improvements, and landscaping. A rededication service was held at the cemetery on October 17, 2021.

The cemetery dates back to 1873 when Benjamin Hendon transferred one-half acre of land to Ames United Methodist Church to establish a cemetery for African American residents of Harford County. Hendon Hill Cemetery is the final resting place of civil war veterans, housekeepers, laborers, children, and founding members of the American Legion Post #55 in Bel Air. Historical research has identified 160 burials at the site, with approximately 70% of the graves being unmarked.

The Hendon Hill Committee, Ames United Methodist Church, and Historical Black Bel Air coordinated the fundraising efforts of the Hendon Hill Project to recognize the historical significance of the site and pay tribute to the African American residents of Bel Air who are buried at the location.

Linkous Family Raises Record-Setting Funds for Childhood Cancer Research and Goes Bald for St. Baldrick's Foundation

Harford Mutual Insurance Group is proud to announce its President and CEO, Steve Linkous, and his family recently went bald for an important cause. They raised not only awareness but a record-setting $550,000 shaving their heads for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest non-government funder of childhood cancer research grants. The Linkous family is currently the top fundraising participant in 2021 for St. Baldrick’s and currently the number one fundraising family this year.

“We had donors who gave a dollar, we had donors who gave $25,000, and of course, Harford Mutual Insurance Group that came behind us and gave $75,000,” said Steve Linkous. “We wanted people to just be part of this, and it speaks to the mutual industry because that's why we're here. We came together to support the community. It’s just so humbling and so fantastic at the same time. We’re thrilled.”

On September 22, 2021, Steve, his wife Sandi Linkous, and their sons Joel and Jacob Linkous, braved the clippers at their head-shaving event at the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) Annual Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Joel donated 30 inches of his hair to Wigs for Kids.

The Linkous family was introduced to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation several years ago through Chuck Chamness, the retiring President and CEO of NAMIC, whose son Joey is a childhood cancer survivor. The Linkous family members are also the top-earning shavees in NAMIC history. Because of the Linkous family’s efforts, the NAMIC Convention head-shaving event had its highest fundraising year since it started in 2014.

The family’s initial fundraising goal was $300,000, and their stretch goal was $400,000, but both goals were shattered as they reached over half a million dollars. These funds will support critical research to find cures and improved treatments for all childhood cancers.

Harford Mutual Insurance Group Wins NAMIC Overall Award in Innovation

Harford Mutual Insurance Group has been named the winner of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) 2021 Overall Award in Innovation.

NAMIC created the Award in Innovation in 2014 to recognize mutual insurers that exemplify the vision and entrepreneurialism it takes to stay relevant in changing times. Harford Mutual received the overall award for its innovative Pipeline and Perpetuation initiative. The goal of the initiative is two-fold: attracting new talent to the insurance industry and developing current employee leadership skills to promote company growth and ensure leadership perpetuation.

“We are extremely honored and thrilled to be presented with NAMIC’s 2021 Award in Innovation,” said Steven D. Linkous, president and CEO of Harford Mutual Insurance Group.

With the retirement of thousands of insurance industry professionals looming and a widening talent gap forming, Harford Mutual launched the Pipeline and Perpetuation initiative in 2013. As part of the cross-departmental plan, the company started an internship program, enhanced employee benefits, created a training program for new team members, formed a company leadership group, and developed a career pathing project. As a result, nine members from its leadership group have been promoted and 29 interns have been employed to date, 13 of which have converted to full-time employees.

“Our Pipeline and Perpetuation initiative is critical to our short- and long-term success and strategies. More importantly, it affirms our commitment to our team by ensuring opportunity for all as an important element of a vibrant, engaged, and empowered organization,” Linkous said.

Award in Innovation criteria included impact in perpetuating mutuality, creativity of idea, project results, potential for the idea to be adapted and used by other NAMIC members, and alignment with the NAMIC Management Conference focus areas: strategy, innovation, leadership, industry trends, and the economy.

“Now, more than ever, finding creative ways to attract young professionals while also developing future leaders is vital to ensuring the successful longevity of our industry,” said Chuck Chamness, president and CEO of NAMIC. “The innovative strategy meticulously executed by Harford Mutual to build its employee and leadership base serves as an excellent example of what keeps the mutual insurance industry moving forward.”
